Second, for no better reason than that, Joseph must leave his home in Nazareth to go about seventy miles south to Bethlehem to participate in the census. Third, for no reason given in the text whatsoever, Mary—still not Joseph’s wife in some sense, pregnant, and close to term—travels with him, and while there gives birth.
